Tradelines vs Credit Repair

Tradelines vs credit repair

These are different services. Credit repair challenges information that is already on your file, on your own accounts, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. A tradeline adds a new account, someone else’s, to your file for a fixed term. One removes or corrects; the other adds. They are governed by different laws, priced differently, documented differently, and they fail in different ways. Pinnacle offers both, and sells them separately. No engagement includes a tradeline, and no tradeline purchase includes dispute work.

What each one actually does

Credit repair is the exercise of your rights under the FCRA. When you dispute an item, the bureau must conduct a reasonable reinvestigation, generally within 30 days, and delete or correct information it cannot verify (15 U.S.C. 1681i). Pinnacle’s version of this is forensic: the file is read against Metro 2 reporting standards and the FCRA’s accuracy, verification and obsolescence rules, the disputes are built on what the report itself shows, and the outcome is documented against dated bureau exhibits. It changes what is reported about your own accounts. It cannot add history you do not have.

An authorized user tradeline is a seat on another person’s established card account, added at the cardholder’s request, reported by the issuer to the bureaus under your identifiers for as long as you remain on the account. It adds that account’s age, limit and payment history to your file. It changes nothing about what is already there. A late payment on your own card is still a late payment with a seat beside it.

Why they are never bundled

Both FTC actions against tradeline sellers, BoostMyScore in 2020 and The Credit Game in 2022, involved a seat sold as a way to improve a credit score, with fees taken up front. A service sold for the express or implied purpose of improving a credit record is a credit repair service under CROA (15 U.S.C. 1679a(3)), and CROA forbids charging for it before it is fully performed (15 U.S.C. 1679b(b)). The Credit Game added fabricated identity theft disputes to the mix. Packaging a purchased seat inside a credit repair engagement is exactly the shape those cases had.

So Pinnacle keeps the two apart. The dispute engagement is a credit repair service and is run as one: written agreement, five day cancellation right under California law, billed as performed, no outcome promise. The tradeline seat is sold as a defined product with a stated term, written refund terms and no representation about your score, to anyone who wants one, whether or not they are a dispute client. The legality article sets out the enforcement record in full.

Which one first

If your file has items you believe are inaccurate, unverifiable or too old to report, dispute them first. A seat added on top of a disputable collection is money spent beside a problem, not on it, and the collection will still dominate any scoring model’s view of the file. If your file is accurate but thin or young, a seat is the tool that addresses that, and a dispute has nothing to work on. Some files are both, and the order is still the same: correct what is wrong, then add history.

That is the opposite of the advice most tradeline sellers give, which is to buy a seat while you dispute. The sequence matters because a seat has a term and a price, and spending both while the file is still wrong wastes them.

How each is documented

Dispute outcomes are published as case files: what was disputed, what the bureau returned, and dated before and after exhibits with the consumer’s identifiers removed. Each case file states what it does not prove. Tradelines are not documented by outcome, because Pinnacle makes no outcome claim about them. They are documented by policy: the term, the bureaus reported to, the utilization cap, and the remedy if a line does not post, all stated in writing before you pay.

Questions people ask

Is a tradeline credit repair?

No. Credit repair disputes what is already on your file under the FCRA. A tradeline adds someone else’s account for a term. Whether a seller of tradelines falls under CROA depends on what it promises and charges for; one that markets a seat as a way to improve your score is making a credit repair promise.

Can a credit repair company sell me a tradeline?

It can, as a separate product with its own terms. What the FTC has acted against is a seat sold inside a credit repair promise with fees taken up front. Pinnacle sells seats separately from its dispute engagements and never includes one in an engagement.

Should I buy a tradeline while I am disputing?

Usually not. Correct the file first. A seat has a fixed term, and a term spent beside an unresolved derogatory item is a term wasted.

Does a tradeline remove collections or late payments?

No. It adds an account. It has no effect on any item already reporting. Removal or correction of an item is a dispute under the FCRA.
