Authorized user tradelines
When you should not buy a tradeline
Pinnacle sells authorized user seats, and this page exists to talk some readers out of buying one. A seat is a paid, short-term addition to your file. It does one thing: it adds another person’s established account, with its age, limit and payment history, for a fixed term. In the situations below it does that and it still does not help, or it costs you money you would have spent better elsewhere, or it creates a problem you did not have. Each item says what to do instead.
1. Your file has items you believe are wrong
An authorized user account sits on top of whatever is already reporting. If there is a collection that is not yours, a balance that is wrong, an account that should have aged off, or a late payment you can show was paid on time, that item stays exactly where it is with a seat beside it, and it keeps dominating any model’s view of the file. Correct the file first. That is a dispute under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a separate service Pinnacle provides and never bundles with a seat. Start with the credit diagnosis if you are not sure what on the file is challengeable.
2. You have recent late payments, charge-offs or collections in your own name
Age and history from someone else’s account do not offset your own. A 90-day late from last year is your history; a ten-year-old card you are an authorized user on is not, and every model knows the difference between the two. If the items are accurate, time and your own on-time payments are what move them, not a seat. If they are inaccurate, see item 1.
3. You are inside a mortgage underwriting window
Fannie Mae’s mortgage fraud guidance lists credit reports where “all tradelines opened at the same time” and “authorized user accounts have superior payment histories” among the patterns an underwriter should question. A new authorized user account appearing between application and closing is a change to the file the lender will see and may ask about. If you are already in process, the honest answer to “what is this account?” is “an authorized user seat I paid for,” and you should be ready to give it. If you would rather not have that conversation, do not buy the seat.
4. You need a specific score by a specific date
No seller can promise a score change, and the two sellers the FTC has shut down both did. FICO says only that recent versions of its score give authorized user accounts less impact than primary accounts; it does not say how much. For loans sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, lenders may currently use Classic FICO or VantageScore 4.0, and which one your lender pulls is not something a seller can know. If your plan depends on reaching a number by a date, a seat is a gamble with a known price and an unknown payoff. Pinnacle’s own FAQ states it: “We do not promise any score outcome.”
5. The line’s closing date is within three days
An authorized user added before the statement closes is on that cycle’s report; one added after waits a month. Reservations close three days before each line’s purchase deadline; inside that window the line shows the following cycle’s date instead. If you need the account on your file this month, pick a line whose order-by date has not passed. The how-to-order page states the timing rules.
6. You could not answer a lender truthfully about it
Buying a seat is lawful. Describing the account as your own on an application, or answering a lender’s question about it untruthfully, is a false statement to a lender, and a false statement to a federally insured lender is a federal offense. The account is reported as an authorized user account and an underwriter can see that. If the only way the seat helps you is by a lender not noticing, do not buy it.
7. Someone is offering it as part of a credit repair package
A seat sold inside a promise to improve your credit, with fees taken up front, is the shape of both FTC cases against tradeline sellers: BoostMyScore in 2020 and The Credit Game in 2022. It does not matter whether the seller calls itself a credit repair company or a tradeline company. If the seat comes bundled with disputes, a “credit sweep,” or a score target, walk away. Pinnacle sells seats only as a separate product with its own written terms, to anyone, whether or not they are a dispute client.
8. A family member with a well-managed card would add you
Then do that first. A parent, spouse or sibling with a long-held card, low utilization and no late payments can add you at no cost, with no term to expire, no seller in the middle and no refund policy to read. The mechanics on your credit report are identical. The paid version exists for people who do not have that option, and it is a worse deal than the family route in every respect except availability.
When a seat is the right tool
None of the above applies, your file is accurate but thin or young, you have no family account to join, you are not inside an underwriting window, you can answer a lender truthfully, and you understand that the effect is uncertain and the term is finite. That is the buyer this product is for. Read the commitments page, the refund policy and the disclosures before you order, and ask any seller the questions in the buyer’s guide.
Questions people ask
Will a tradeline help if I have collections?
Not in the way people hope. A seat adds an account; it does not touch the collection, which keeps dominating the file. If the collection is inaccurate, dispute it first. If it is accurate, a seat does not offset it.
Should I buy a tradeline before applying for a mortgage?
Only if you are prepared to explain it. A new authorized user account with a far better history than your own accounts matches a Fannie Mae fraud red flag, and an underwriter may ask about it. Answer truthfully. If you are already in process, adding accounts is usually the wrong move.
Is it better to be added by family than to buy a seat?
Yes, whenever it is available. The effect on your report is the same, and the family route has no cost, no term and no seller. Buy a seat only if that option does not exist for you.
Can I buy a tradeline while Pinnacle is disputing my file?
You can, but Pinnacle will tell you to wait. A seat has a fixed term, and a term spent beside unresolved items is a term wasted. The two services are sold separately and are never bundled, so the choice and the timing are yours.
