Authorized User

Glossary

Authorized User

An authorized user is someone added to another person's credit-card account who can use it without being legally responsible for the debt. The account's history may then appear on the authorized user's credit report.

Why it matters in credit repair

Authorized-user reporting is a legitimate tool but is sometimes abused through paid "tradeline renting," which raises accuracy and misrepresentation concerns. Accurate authorized-user accounts cannot be disputed merely because they are positive.

How it appears on a credit report

The account appears as a tradeline on the authorized user's report, often noted with an authorized-user or terms-of-account designation.

Example

A parent adds a child as an authorized user on a long-standing card, and that account's positive history begins appearing on the child's report.

Common misunderstanding

Consumers assume authorized-user accounts always help and always report. Some issuers do not report them, and the benefit varies by scoring model.
