Credit Mix

Glossary

Credit Mix

Credit mix is the variety of account types on a credit report — such as revolving credit cards and installment loans. It is a smaller scoring factor that rewards responsibly managing different kinds of credit.

Why it matters in credit repair

Credit mix is a minor factor consumers often overweight. It cannot be repaired, but understanding it prevents misdirected effort, such as opening unnecessary accounts before a mortgage application.

How it appears on a credit report

Mix is inferred from the account types present on the report; it is not a labeled field or a number shown to the consumer.

Example

A consumer with only credit cards is told a small benefit might come from an installment loan, but the effect is modest.

Common misunderstanding

Consumers sometimes open loans solely to improve mix. The factor is small, and new accounts can temporarily lower the average age of accounts.
