FCRA 623 (Furnisher Responsibilities)
FCRA Section 623 (15 U.S.C. 1681s-2) defines the duties of furnishers — the creditors and collectors that report to bureaus — including providing accurate information and investigating disputes a bureau forwards.
Why it matters in credit repair
623 makes the furnisher itself accountable. A furnisher that cannot substantiate disputed data through a reasonable investigation may be unable to support its continued reporting.
How it appears on a credit report
623 governs furnisher conduct rather than appearing as a field; its effect shows in whether a furnisher corrects or deletes data it cannot verify.
Example
A collector that received a forwarded dispute under 623 cannot produce records substantiating the account's balance and history, undermining continued reporting.
Common misunderstanding
Consumers often dispute only with bureaus. Under 623 the furnisher has its own obligations, and many strategies apply pressure at both levels.
