Furnisher
A furnisher is any entity that reports account information to the credit bureaus — typically an original creditor, debt buyer, or collection agency. Furnisher duties are governed by FCRA 623.
Why it matters in credit repair
Furnishers are the source of the data on a credit report. A furnisher that cannot verify disputed information is the pressure point in many complex disputes.
How it appears on a credit report
The furnisher is identified on each tradeline as the reporting creditor or collector; its accuracy obligations underpin most disputes.
Example
After a debt is sold, the new debt buyer becomes the furnisher; if it cannot substantiate the chain of ownership, the reporting may be challengeable.
Common misunderstanding
Consumers sometimes blame only the bureaus for errors. The furnisher originates the data and bears its own FCRA accuracy duties.
