Civil Judgment
A civil judgment is a court ruling that a consumer owes a debt. Since 2017, judgments generally no longer appear on the three nationwide credit reports because they often lacked the required identifying and verification standards.
Why it matters in credit repair
Many consumers still believe judgments are on their reports. Knowing they are typically excluded prevents wasted disputes, though a judgment can still affect a consumer outside credit reporting through collection efforts.
How it appears on a credit report
Judgments are generally absent from modern nationwide credit reports; older reports or specialty reports may differ.
Example
A consumer worried about a judgment on their mortgage application learns it is not on the nationwide reports the lender pulled.
Common misunderstanding
Consumers assume any judgment automatically tanks their credit report. Most no longer appear on nationwide reports due to data-standard changes.
