Method of Verification (MOV)
Method of verification is a consumer's request under FCRA 611(a)(7), after a dispute is "verified," for the bureau to describe how it verified the information, including the furnisher contacted and the procedure used.
Why it matters in credit repair
An MOV request tests whether a verification was actually reasonable. A vague or inadequate response may indicate the reinvestigation fell short, supporting a re-dispute or CFPB escalation.
How it appears on a credit report
The MOV process is procedural; the bureau's response is provided to the consumer rather than shown on the report.
Example
A consumer requests the MOV after an item is verified; the response reveals the bureau relied solely on an automated furnisher reply, suggesting a shallow investigation.
Common misunderstanding
Consumers sometimes expect an MOV request to force deletion. It is an evidentiary tool that strengthens a re-dispute, not an automatic removal.
