VantageScore
VantageScore is a credit-scoring model developed jointly by Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, ranging from 300 to 850. It is common in free consumer credit apps but used less often by mortgage lenders than FICO.
Why it matters in credit repair
The score shown in a free app is frequently a VantageScore, which can differ markedly from the FICO a lender pulls — explaining why a consumer's app score may not match a loan decision.
How it appears on a credit report
Like FICO, it is computed from the report data rather than stored on the report. Different models weigh the same data differently.
Example
A consumer sees a 720 VantageScore in an app but the mortgage lender's FICO comes back at 680, delaying approval.
Common misunderstanding
Consumers assume the free score is the one lenders use. Many lenders, especially in mortgages, rely on specific FICO versions instead.
